Asset Vue Integration

Overview

Asset Vue is an IT Asset Management Solution (ITAM) that uses RFID or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags to track and manage all the data center assets.

When RAMP is integrated with Asset Vue, asset location and asset information is seamlessly and automatically shared between RAMP and Asset Vue.

Software Requirements

Table shows the software version compatibility between RAMP and Asset Vue. Testing RAMP with Asset Vue software versions other than the combinations shown below may lead to unpredictable results.

Ramp Version Asset Vue Version
3.10 2.12 and 2.13
3.11 2.13
3.12 2.13
3.13 2.13
3.14 2.13

Enabling The Feature

The Asset Vue settings menu option will allow you to configure the Asset Vue feature. The Asset Vue settings include the following configuration fields:

  • Asset Vue on/off: Check this box to enable Asset Vue integration
  • Enable update assets from RAMP to Asset Vue if the asset is Not verified: Check this box to enable updating assets from RAMP to Asset Vue if the asset is Not verified in Asset Vue.
  • Enable update assets from RAMP to Asset Vue if the asset is verified: Check this box to enable updating assets from RAMP to Asset Vue if the asset is verified in Asset Vue.
  • Enable creating and deleting assets in Asset Vue: Check this box to enable RAMP to create and delete assets in Asset Vue.
  • Asset Vue server URL: Enter the server URL in this field to allow RAMP to communicate with Asset Vue.
  • User Name: Enter the username used to login to Asset Vue.
  • Password: Enter the password used to login to Asset Vue.
  • Show Passwords: Check this box to display the hidden password field (admin user only).

Synchronization Behavior

The following section describes functional requirements of the interoperability between Asset Vue and RAMP.

Location and sub-location (“room”) names are case-sensitive and must match exactly between RAMP and Asset Vue. This is an important requirement for the synchronization to work properly.

A room that is contained within a location, will have its GUID field populated when synchronized between Asset Vue and RAMP. In this scenario, the location will not have its GUID field populated.

Racks require same Manufacturer and Serial Number to synchronize. Rack names are not used as part of the matching criteria unless a serial number does not exist in either of the databases. In this case RAMP will match based on the rack name and parent location. Note rack name is case-insensitive and location is case-sensitive.

RAMP will match the asset based on parent location, manufacturer and serial number. The matching algorithm is case-sensitive for location and serial number, and case-insensitive for manufacturer.

When a device is matched between RAMP and Asset Vue, the “Asset Vue Properties” field “GUID” will be populated; this is the only indication that a device has been successfully synchronized between the two applications. If present, RFID tag information, barcode, and verification status are synchronized from AV to RAMP.

To manually force matching an asset between Asset Vue and RAMP, even if the asset does not satisfy the matching requirements as described above, copy the GUID for the asset from Asset Vue and paste the GUID in the Asset Vue Properties: “GUID” field.

SETTING: ENABLE UPDATE ASSETS FROM RAMP TO ASSET VUE IF THE ASSET IS NOT VERIFIED

THE FOLLOWING SECTION DESCRIBES THE SYNCHRONIZATION BEHAVIOR IF THIS OPTION IS ON

If an asset in RAMP is updated, the following properties will be updated in Asset Vue: Location, Name, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Model. This applied to Not Verified assets in Asset Vue.

SETTING: ENABLE UPDATE ASSETS FROM RAMP TO ASSET VUE IF THE ASSET IS VERIFIED

THE FOLLOWING SECTION DESCRIBES THE SYNCHRONIZATION BEHAVIOR IF THIS OPTION IS ON

If an asset in RAMP is updated, the following properties will be updated in Asset Vue: Location, Name, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Model. This applied to Verified assets in Asset Vue.

SETTING: ENABLE CREATING AND DELETING ASSETS IN ASSET VUE

THE FOLLOWING SECTION DESCRIBES THE SYNCHRONIZATION BEHAVIOR IF THIS OPTION IS ON

CREATING ASSETS:

  1. Devices and Racks created in RAMP will be pushed to Asset Vue.
  2. Reserved devices created in RAMP will be pushed to Asset Vue.
  3. Discovered devices in RAMP must be placed in a location, sub-location (IE “room”) or rack for RAMP to push the newly discovered device to Asset Vue.
  4. Floor-mounted devices should be created in a sub-location (“room”) to be pushed to Asset Vue.
  5. Unplaced devices are ignored and not synchronized to Asset Vue.

DELETING ASSETS:

If a synchronized asset is deleted in RAMP, the asset will also be deleted in Asset Vue.

Force update option

A new “Force Push” Button is added to the Asset Vue Properties of every asset in RAMP:

  1. This button will be enabled if the respective asset in RAMP is linked to Asset Vue with an Asset Vue GUID.
  2. This manual option will work regardless of the settings above.
  3. The only fields to be updated will be Location, Name, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Model.

Asset Vue to RAMP Synchronization

CREATING ASSETS

Adding an asset in Asset Vue does not add the device to RAMP.

UPDATING ASSETS IN ASSET VUE

Updates for asset location in Asset Vue for a synchronized asset are retrieved from Asset Vue by RAMP once every 24-hrs at 03:00 local time or immediately following execution of the RAMP Scheduled Hangfire job “IAssetVueJob.Process”.

DELETING ASSETS IN ASSET VUE

If a synchronized asset is deleted in Asset Vue, the asset is not deleted in RAMP.

Limitations/known issues

  1. An asset update can take 30 – 60 seconds (duration of a TCP timeout). RAMP performs a read of the latest data on the asset from Asset Vue. Then update the desired field. This can create a theoretical window for the asset to change while the asset update operation is happening. This is not expected in production but is a consideration never the less. Be patient.
  2. Automated Asset updates considerations:
  1. They are triggered only by a location update.
  2. Sometime the update trigger will happen before the data is saved in the RAMP database. The immediate remediation is force update or triggering the update again by a location update.
  3. For data integrity, if the RAMP Asset is mapped to a Generic Unknown Model, Automated and forced update operations are skipped by the RAMP API.
